After purchasing digital sneaker studio RTFKT, the NFT community has been waiting in anticipation for Nike’s next move. It looks like the sportswear giant is assembling the best talent to beef up its roster. In the last two weeks, the brand has posted five Metaverse-related jobs! This move proves that in 2022, they are taking their digital transformation to the next level!
About Nike’s Metaverse Jobs
Among the roles, the most senior job is the Director for Metaverse Engineering. This post entails using strong engineering leadership, communication and innovation skills to lead critical aspects of the business. For example, the development of rapid end-to-end proof of concepts, prototypes and the production of metaverse software and device solutions. Basically, the future occupant of this role will spearhead the tech side of the operations.
Nike is also looking for a Metaverse and Principal Innovation Engineer. Then, rounding up the openings are Virtual Material Designer and Expert Innovation Program Manager.
Clearly, the brand is doubling down on its NFT, Web3 and Metaverse execution. So purchasing RTFKT is just the start of its long-term plans. On its own, RTFKT sold $3.1 million worth of NFT sneakers in just 6 minutes, so combining it with such an iconic brand is a no-brainer in terms of commercial success. Commenting on the acquisition, Nike CEO John Donahoe said, “Our plan is to invest in the RTFKT brand, serve and grow their innovative and creative community and extend Nike’s digital footprint and capabilities.”
In the job posting, Nike reiterated their position about the future of Nike. “At Nike’s Technology Office, we unleash the power of technology, innovation and talent.”
Market Watch
Generally, the community is happy that Nike is serious about its Metaverse move. Otherwise, why would they hire senior positions? However, one valid concern is that it seems like Nike is still in the building phase. So would that mean that it might take a while for them to drop an NFT offering?
Meanwhile, Nike’s biggest rival, Adidas, is also deep into NFTs. The brand’s successful Debut NFT Collection “Into the Metaverse” bagged more than $23 Million! Since then, they have been making NFT holders happy by releasing exclusive perks such as rights to redeem physical merchandise. In addition, Adidas teamed up with Italian luxury fashion house Prada to showcase the endless possibilities in the Metaverse. “Adidas for Prada re-source” is an interactive and dynamic platform that will enable the NFT holders to contribute to a large-scale artwork through play.
Indeed, NFTs make sense for the fashion industry because they eliminate many operational challenges. In addition, it could mean millions of NEW customers for brands. So the opportunities in the Metaverse could really propel the first movers to new heights. Nike wants a piece of that action!
